Who is Jesus?

JESUS

The Church belongs to Him, and He is our Senior Pastor. Under Jesus’ leadership, the leaders of the Church are simply qualified Christians who follow Jesus and encourage others to follow Him too. At Vintage Church, our formal leadership structure includes pastors, deacons, and church members.

IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS

NO ONE IS MORE LOVED OR HATED THAN JESUS.

That’s not surprising, since He is the most famous person in all of human history. More songs have been sung to Him, works of art created for Him, and books written about Him than anyone who has ever lived. Our calendar is based on His life, dividing time before and after Him.

Naturally, someone so significant will have fans and enemies.

And many people have an idea of who Jesus is.

They might get this idea from TV or movies, maybe from a past church experience or Sunday School, from history books, or just hearsay.

But just because we have ideas about who Jesus is doesn’t mean we actually know Him.

At Vintage Church, everything is about Jesus — and the only way to truly know Jesus is by understanding what the Bible says about Him, including what He said about Himself.

JESUS IS A GOOD FRIEND

We’ve all been a bad friend at some point.

Maybe we took advantage of a friend, were rude to another, or just weren’t there when we were needed. And we’ve probably experienced this ourselves.

But Jesus is a good friend. In fact, He is the perfect friend. And even when we’re terrible friends to Him, He is always a good friend to us.

Jesus is such a good friend — and we are such bad ones — that He knew the only way to save our friendship was to die for our sins. And He did it willingly.

Because of Jesus and His death on the cross, we have the daily opportunity to become better friends of Jesus and with Jesus.

And in doing so, we learn some incredible things about Him.

As a good friend, Jesus loves us better than we could ever love Him, love others — or even love ourselves.

As a good friend, Jesus guides us, showing us how to live and love in a way that brings glory to God and fulfillment to our lives.

As a good friend, Jesus forgives our sin, even though we don’t deserve it — He sacrificed His life so we could live.

As a good friend, Jesus is fun, having enjoyed parties and time with His friends.

As a good friend, Jesus listens. And not only that, He prays for us when He hears our prayers. He cares about what’s going on in our lives.

JESUS IS A TRUTHFUL FRIEND

Jesus is a true friend. He tells the truth about Himself, about us, and about the world.

As a truthful friend, Jesus taught that He is God, who came down from heaven to be a man among His creation, that He was sinless, that He would die on the cross for our sins, that He would forgive sin, and that He is the only way to heaven.

As a truthful friend, Jesus taught that we are sinners, that on our own it is impossible to be friends with God because of our sin, and that the only way to be friends with God is through Him.

As a truthful friend, Jesus taught that this world is broken and needs to be fixed. Jesus promised to return and fix this broken world. On that day, there will be no more tears, no more disease, and no more pain. Creation will be good again through Jesus.

JESUS IS A POWERFUL FRIEND

Jesus is a powerful friend whom the Bible speaks of as a King and conqueror.

As a powerful friend, Jesus is the King over all creation — and He is establishing His kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. This means that nothing is beyond Jesus’ influence and everything is subject to Him.

As a powerful friend, Jesus defeated Satan, sin, and death. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead in victory. Today, He is alive and well! And Jesus is coming back to destroy evil forever.

For those who have faith in Jesus, there is no need to fear, because Satan has no power over us. Sin no longer controls us — we’ve been forgiven — and death is not the end, but the beginning of life after this life with Jesus.

As a powerful friend, Jesus leads His church through the Holy Spirit. He calls leaders and equips them to lead well. He brings people from sin and shame to life and forgiveness. He creates a community where people serve one another and the world.

As a powerful friend, Jesus is generous. He gives forgiveness and grace freely to all who ask, having given His own life to provide it. He also gives us His Holy Spirit, who empowers us as Christians to live in victory through Jesus’ strength.
